Made two years before the first Soviet adaptation of 12 Chairs, The Golden Calf is a film based on the sequel to the book on which the later film is based. Got all that?
Since it was directed by a sane person rather than Leonid Gaidai, while still a comedy, The Golden Calf is a fairly traditional one — still silly but without the wonderful, complete lunacy that often rears its head in Gaidai's work. since it was useless to keep trying not to think about odesa, i went all in. это не рио де жанейро...
i realized watching this that ostap bender is the soviet equivalent of the american old hollywood-era sleazy private detective. i mean, i've thought a lot about what it would look like to try and transpose that character to the ussr, where there was no such thing as a private detective agency or civilian detective license, over the last year. of course you get ostap bender. it's such a shame it took until the '70s for hollywood to adapt ilf & petrov. imagine if they made this in the '30s with irish guys. i'm crying thinking about it.

Absolutely amazing transformation from a smart con man to a lunatic blindly obsessed with money. I didn't know this is already the second part of the story, but I didn't read the books either. It was a great, although too long, journey. The ending is impactful and cinematic.

Уже по названиям романов о Бендере видно, что второй до двух серий урезать проще, чем первый: из песни стульев не выкинешь, сосчитаны, а вот с дороги к подпольному миллионеру, которого Бендер собирается щупать за вымя, легко смести встречи с американцами и монархистом. Жалко, конечно, "сгоревшую" на монтажном столе "воронью слободку", вместо которой красиво дымится "Антилопа", и даже Берлагу, из "вице-короля Индии" разжалованного в эпизодического допрошенного. Но со всеми строками универсального штампа, высмеивающего бюрократию, можно ознакомиться при чтении оригинала. A very solid adaption of the book where its most important virtue is slutwhoring and fanservicing Bender left and right. Its plot did not warrant the almost three hour runtime so if you're not into bendertiddies, you will have a hard time sitting through it, otherwise Yursky is in the Ostap Bender hall of fame forever o7
