20th Century Studios is considering making a new Alien vs. Predator movie — and thankfully, it’ll be nothing like the franchises’ previous crossover films. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, 20th Century Studios president Steve Asbell provided a bunch of exciting updates on the company’s upcoming productions and development slate. He mentioned Sam Raimi’s new thriller Send Help and Jeremy Allen White’s Bruce Springsteen biopic Deliver Me from Nowhere, which are both about to begin filming, and he also brought up some tantalizing sequels.

Asbell confirmed that a sequel to Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is arriving in 2027. He also teased that there’s a secret Predator movie in the works that’s already been shot, and that they’re having serious discussions with Fede Álvarez about developing a sequel to Alien: Romulus following up on Rain and Andy’s journey. And not only that, he suggested that another crossover between the Alien and Predator franchises is on the cards — and it’ll be a different beast than the existing Alien vs. Predator movies.

A New Alien Vs. Predator Would Have To Be Different From Previous Films

The Next Crossover Needs To Take Another Approach

Any new Alien vs. Predator movie would have to take a very different approach than the previous films. The first Alien vs. Predator crossover wasn’t terrible — it provided all the monster movie thrills promised by its title — but its sequel, Requiem, was the very definition of terrible. Audiences are more sophisticated now. A new AvP movie either has to go big and bombastic, like Godzilla vs. Kong, or go for a full-blown standalone horror experience, like Prey or Alien: Romulus.

The last AvP movie, Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, was released on December 25, 2007.

Asbell’s comments are a promising sign for this fresh take. He said it wouldn’t be “anything like the original movies,” and that if they did make another AvP movie, it would be “organically created out of these two franchises,” following the beloved characters that have already been introduced. One of the biggest problems with the previous Alien vs. Predator films is that they existed outside their respective franchises’ canon, so they were just generic action horror movies using familiar iconography to get butts in seats.

What The Ideal Alien Vs. Predator Movie Would Look Like After Prey & Romulus

A New AvP Movie Should Be Just As Interested In Story & Character As Blockbuster Spectacle

A new Alien vs. Predator movie wouldn’t have to be directly tied to Prey or Alien: Romulus (although it would be really cool if it was), but it does have to repeat what they got right. Both Prey and Romulus weren’t just in the business of delivering jump scares and action set-pieces; they were just as interested in developing their characters and their interpersonal relationships. An Alien vs. Predator reboot can’t just rely on the gimmick of the crossover; it needs to have a story worth telling and characters worth investing in, which the previous AvP films didn’t have.
