Donald Trumphas confirmed he is set to meet with King Charles during a visit to Windsor Castle later this year.

The US President will likely make the trip with his wife Melania in September, he told reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday.

'I was invited by the King and the great country. They are going to do a second fest - that's what it is. It is beautiful,' Mr Trump said.

'It is the second time is has happened to one person. The reason is we have two separate terms and it's an honour to be a friend of King Charles and the family, William.'

Mr Trump added: 'I think they are setting a date for September. I don't know how it can be bigger than the last one. The last one was incredible but they say the next one will be even more important.'

Sir Keir Starmer and Mr Trump discussed the visit during a telephone call and are close to agreeing on a plan, the Telegraph reports.

The Government is supposedly seeking to 'reaffirm transatlantic ties' following Mr Trump's imposition of tariffs on the UK and other countries last month.

The US leader was invited for a meeting with the Royal Familyin June, July and August, all of which he declined, according to the Telegraph.

He has reportedly now signalled approval for a visit to Windsor Castle in September where he will meet with members of the Royal Family.

It comes after Charles personally invited Mr Trump for a second state visit to the UK later this year.

During a visit to the White House in February, Sir Keirextended an official invitation from the monarch to the president.

The King suggested he and Mr Trump could meet before that visit, either at Dumfries House or Balmoral, which are near the businessman's golf courses in Scotland, to discuss the plans for the much grander state visit.

Trump made several visits to Britain in his first term, when Elizabeth II was on the throne, including a state visit.

Precedent for second-term US presidents who have already made a state visit is usually tea or lunch with the monarch at Windsor Castle, as was the case for George W Bush and Barack Obama.

But Mr Trump – the first ever convicted felon to become US president – has received an invitation to make a second state visit.

The US president has strong links to Scotland.

His mother was born on the Isle of Lewis and he owns a golf resort atTurnberry in Ayrshire.

During his first spell in the White House, Mr Trump visited both Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace to meet Queen Elizabeth II.

Last year a biography of the late monarch said shefound Trump 'very rude'.

The former sovereign is said to have 'particularly disliked' the way he looked over her shoulder as if 'in search of others more interesting'.

She also mused over his relationship with his wife Melania and said she believed they must have 'some sort of arrangement'.

The astonishing claims were made by Craig Brown in his book, A Voyage Around The Queen, which was serialised in the Daily Mail.
